“White Gold” is a moniker given to natural latex due to its milky white color when tapped from rubber trees. Its value comparison to gold has been heavily influenced by rapid industrialization and trade of the commodity via colonialism. Southeast Asia currently hosts many of the world’s largest rubber producing states — operating in the wake of French occupation and the industries that maneuvered their economic growth. The tire company Michelin held stakes in the colonial development of “Indochina” since the early 20th century, exploiting local land, labor, and lives for capital gain.
